Protecting Ideas

Our Competitors
Avoiding Risks

In addition to our work, our clients employ services and products that protect the ideas that are an important corporate asset. It is important to note that protecting intellectual property requires protecting executives as well. Here are some resources that we recommend.

Secure cordless telephones - most cordless phones broadcast conversations for blocks. Neighbors with scanners can hear every word on the phone from your home. We recommend that only cordless phones which use "spread spectrum" modulation (invented by the technologist Nikola Tesla and the actress Hedy Lamarr) or encrypted digital modulation.

Wireless headsets - officer workers who use wireless headsets are often broadcasting confidential information around the office (and possibly outside). A product that is not easily intercepted and works well is available from www.jabra.com, see the GN9300 series.

Paper shredding - sending paper out without shredding is an invitation to dumpster divers. Strip shredders (the kind that cut paper into ribbons) are not much better. A cross-cut shredder is necessary for real protection of sensitive material that is thrown into the trash. When planning for executive copy rooms be certain to include a cross-cut shredder that can take handfuls of paper with staples and paperclips included.

Escape from fire - in hotels or airplanes. A simple head covering that includes protection for eyes and filters for breathing air is available for under $200. This is especially important in minor aircraft incidents (the most common kind) which result in a fire. Having a device like this will allow seeing and breathing long enough to escape an otherwise lethal hotel blaze.  www.quickmask.com

A comprehensive policy is needed to protect corporate assets. Keeping intellectual property save is really challenging today. Get a security professional to evaluate computer network vulnerability and to recommend solutions. We recommend  www.ioactive.com.

case study
case title

Shredding companies offer an attractive alternative to expensive, messy shredders.

Be careful to find out the details, however. One of the most popular companies, Shred-it, offers convenient boxes to deposit paper that they will shred later. The boxes have badly designed locks and actually decrease security by concentrating sensitive paper and not protecting it.

When performing sweeps for clients we often check the security of these containers by picking the locks on Shred-it boxes. Our record is 8 seconds. Most can be opened in under 30 seconds. Don't use these products without additional lock protection.
