Most anonymous tips are just an attempt to get even. True whistleblower situations are less common than one would expect.

Typically an investigation of an anonymous tip dies because of a lack of clues. In this situation it is tempting to interview employees.

"Is George stealing pencils from the office?" After asking George's coworkers they might become convinced that he is stealing pencils whether or not George is guilty.

There is a better way to proceed with an investigation. If someone is accused by a tipster, it is often possible to find the truth by simply looking at the computer used by the accused.

Forensic evidence can clearly find the guilty and exonerate the innocent.

case study
case title

A local school district with a low tolerance for employee misbehavior called us recently.

The night janitor was accused of participating in online gambling via one of the district's computers.

Our investigation indicated that the gambling site evidence on the machine consisted of 6 banner ads and 1 site visit. The answer was simple. This employee was lured to look at a gambling site but was not participating.

The school district was relieved to not fire a long time employee. Computer forensics saved a job!
